Jesus Came to Help Hurting People
Hey friend, open your Bible to Luke 4 and get ready—Jesus’ very first public sermon is about to wreck you (in the best way). He didn’t start with a theology lecture. He started with pain… because that’s who He came for.
Let that sink in. Jesus’ mission statement = hurting people.
The People Jesus Always Stopped For 😢➡️😭➡️🎉
Everywhere Jesus Qty went in the Gospels, broken people ran to Him:
- The bleeding woman who just needed to touch His robe (Mark 5:25-34)
- Blind Bartimaeus yelling on the side of the road (Mark 10:46-52)
- The demon-possessed man no one could chain (Mark 5:1-20)
- Tax collectors, prostitutes, lepers… the “messy” ones.
He never said, “Come back when you have your doctrine straightened out.”
He just healed, forgave, fed, and loved.
“The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
— Luke 19:10 (ESV)
The Hidden Bombshell in Jesus’ First Sermon 💥
When Jesus said “the year of the Lord’s favor,” every Jew in that synagogue gasped.
That phrase = The Year of Jubilee (see Leviticus 25).
Every 50 years God commanded:
- All debts canceled 💸
- All slaves freed 🕊️
- All land returned to original families 🏡
- Everyone gets a total reset.
Here’s the gut punch: Israel never once obeyed the Jubilee. Not even one time.
God was furious (Jeremiah 34:13-17). Because of it, He sent them into exile.
So when Jesus stands up and says, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled,” He’s shouting:
“I AM the walking, breathing, debt-canceling, prisoner-freeing, ultimate JUBILEE!”
Your sin debt? Canceled.
Your shame? Returned to sender.
Your chains? Shattered.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
— John 8:36 (ESV)
Your Turn: Who’s Hurting Around You Right Now? 🤝
Jesus didn’t just come for “those people back then.” He came for the single mom drowning in bills, the teen cutting in the bathroom, the guy hooked on pills, the refugee who lost everything.
And He left us His example:
“I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”
— John 13:15 (ESV)
Practical next steps (pick one today):
- Text that friend who’s been ghosting everyone: “I’m here. No judgment.”
- Drop off groceries anonymously to the family you know is struggling.
- Sit with someone in their mess—no fixing, just presence.
- Forgive the debt someone owes you (literal or emotional).
Because the Jubilee King lives in YOU now.
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me… to bring good news to the poor.”
— Isaiah 61:1 (quoted by Jesus!)
You’re anointed for the same mission.
Let’s Pray 🙏
Jesus—Jubilee King, thank You for canceling every debt I could never pay. Thank You for setting this captive free. Open my eyes today to the hurting people right in front of me. Give me courage to love like You love, to stop like You stop, and to announce Your freedom everywhere I go. Use my ordinary life to show the world that the Year of the Lord’s favor is still here—because You are still here. In Your powerful name, Amen.
When the Son Sets You Free
Jesus didn’t come just to get you out of hell—He came to get hell out of you.
Real freedom isn’t the absence of chains you can see… it’s the removal of the chains nobody else can.
Let’s get honest. We’re all in some kind of prison.
The Prisons We Live In 🚔
- Addictions & Compulsions 💉
“I can stop anytime…” (said every addict ever).
Alcohol, porn, shopping, scrolling, approval—you name it. If you can’t say no, you’re not in control.“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36 ESV)
- Secrets 🤫
That thing you swore you’d take to the grave? It’s not buried—it’s burying YOU.
Shame thrives in the dark.“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” (James 5:16 ESV)
- Ignorance 📚
Not knowing the Word keeps you stuck.
Hosea 4:6 is brutal: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
- Fear 😱
The #1 jail cell in the human heart.
Fear of failure. Fear of man. Fear of tomorrow.
It paralyzes more dreams than failure ever will.“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)
Jesus read His mission statement out loud in Luke 4:18 (ESV):
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…
to proclaim liberty to the captives…
to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”
That wasn’t only about iron bars. That was about YOU.
Free Through and Through 🕊️
Freedom in Christ isn’t just forgiven—it’s transformed.
It’s not “I still struggle but God loves me anyway.”
It’s “I’m actually becoming someone who doesn’t want the old stuff anymore.”
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV)
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1 ESV)
Every single day you’re moving:
➡️ Toward freedom
or
⬅️ Back into bondage
There is no neutral.
Your Move Today 🚪
Whose voice are you listening to?
The legalists? The perfectionists? The inner critic?
Or the One who already tore the prison door off its hinges?
You’re not waiting on more willpower.
You’re waiting on surrender.

Closing Prayer 🙏
Father,
Thank You that the price for my freedom has already been paid in full.
I confess the prisons I keep walking back into—addictions, secrets, fear, ignorance.
Today I choose Jesus.
Set me free through and through.
Let every chain that still makes noise in my life fall silent at the name of Jesus.
Fill me with Your Spirit until there’s no room left for the old me.
I receive Your freedom right now—not as a feeling, but as a fact.
In the mighty, chain-breaking name of Jesus,
Amen.
You are free.
Now walk like it. 🕊️🔥
